Fire was confined to the first floor of the building. Among the victims will be Indian citizens, including a 14-year-old child. 20 people were left homeless, according to the civil protection.

The fire that broke out on Saturday night at number 55 on Rua do Terreirinho caused two deaths and 14 injured. The two deaths, including that of a 14-year-old child, and the injured are all of foreign nationality, mostly from South Asia.

The dead were on the first floor, the same fire department source said.

The fire left at least 20 people homeless, according to the first information from the municipal civil protection.

According to data from Lisbon’s Municipal Civil Protection Service (SMPC), the 20 homeless are 11 people who are hospitalized and nine more who are on site.

Two adults and two children transported to the emergency room at Santa Maria Hospital were discharged overnight.

“They needed to receive oxygen, but did not inspire care,” said a source from the University Hospital Center Lisboa Norte.

The official pointed out that the data is still being updated and that early information indicates that the number of residents in the building will be higher.

The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, who went to the site during Saturday night, guaranteed support for the homeless.

The fire alert was given at 8:37 pm on Saturday and the fire was extinguished at 9:15 pm, a source from the Fire Department told Lusa.
