An 18-month-old baby died on Friday, allegedly due to asphyxiation, in São Lourenço da Montaria, in the municipality of Viana do Castelo.
The case was reported, indicating that the child may have died following “play between siblings.”
The Territorial Command of the National Republican Guard (GNR) of Viana do Castelo received the alert at 7:00 PM.
At the scene, authorities found that the child had “rope marks on the neck, suggesting this was the cause of death.”
The death was declared at 8:10 PM, after firefighters from Viana do Castelo attended to the child.
The report noted that the child was one of nine children of a French couple who have “resided in Portugal for about a year” and live an “alternative” lifestyle by cultivating their own food.
The Sub-regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection of Alto Minho confirmed that resources from the Municipal Firefighters of Viana do Castelo, Volunteer Firefighters of Viana do Castelo, GNR, VMER, and the Judiciary Police (PJ) were deployed, totaling 11 operatives supported by six vehicles.
The PJ stated they are “investigating since the facts were reported to them.”
Further information was sought from the GNR.
