The National Republican Guard (GNR) has issued a message commemorating the 21st anniversary of an ambush on the 2nd Contingent of Subgroup ALFA in Iraq during a mission.
On Facebook, the soldiers recounted that “21 years ago, we faced an ambush in Iraq during an operation,” noting that from “this very violent and ostentatious reaction by the adversary, which used light, heavy weapons, and mortars, there were two serious injuries and one minor injury to our Special Operations Section, in addition to four serious injuries among the Italian Carabinieri Paratroopers”.
Today, over two decades later, the GNR remembers Subgroup ALFA in Iraq “with respect and regard for all those who had the courage to be part of this peacekeeping mission”.
Through the same social network, the soldiers emphasized that “this mission was a national duty, within the scope of international commitments and solidarity with the Iraqi people”.
The GNR also expressed “deep recognition and admiration for all the effort and dedication of these soldiers deployed to Iraq,” stressing that “the courage and determination demonstrated in this situation of extreme risk are inspiring in the history of our Guard”.
“These soldiers fulfilled their duty with bravery, representing with dignity and professionalism the humility of the Soldier of the Law,” the statement continued.
