A 26-year-old man died this Friday afternoon after experiencing difficulties in the water at the International Section of the Minho River (TIRM). Another individual of the same age managed to save himself.
The alert was received at 7:30 PM by the Alto Minho Emergency and Civil Protection Sub-regional Command, according to a statement from the National Maritime Authority (AMN) sent to the newsrooms.
“Upon arrival at the location, it was found that one of the victims had already left the water on their own and was physically well, while the other young man was retrieved unconscious from the water and transported to the shore of the TIRM by a nearby boat,” explained the authority.
Personnel from the National Institute of Medical Emergency’s (INEM) Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) and the Valença Volunteer Firefighters “initiated resuscitation maneuvers,” but the young man, who was transported in critical condition to a hospital, ultimately died.
The Maritime Police’s Psychology Office was activated.
The Local Command of the Caminha Maritime Police took charge of the incident.
In addition to the firefighters and VMER, elements from the Caminha Maritime Police Local Command, Project SeaWatch, the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the Naval Command of Minho were mobilized.
