‘2720’ by Basil da Cunha receives the award for best short film at Shortcutz Ovar

The short film ‘2720’, which won the Best European Film award at the Clermont-Ferrand International Festival in France last year, among other accolades, is described as a realistic narrative set in a neighborhood that awakens to the news of a police raid, intertwining the fates of its three protagonists in the worst possible way.

According to the film’s synopsis, 7-year-old Camila embarks on a search for her missing brother following a police raid, while Jysone, who is newly released from prison, traverses the neighborhood looking for a ride to work.

The jury of Shortcutz Ovar commended Basil da Cunha for capturing and poetically revealing a clandestine neighborhood in ‘2720’, honoring Reboleira in Amadora, identified through its postal code, which serves as the title of the short film.

Basil da Cunha’s film also received the audience award at Shortcutz Ovar, gathering the most spectator votes during the eight sessions held throughout last year.

‘Corpos Cintilantes’ by Inês Teixeira earned the special jury prize in the official competitive selection, ‘Rinha’ by Rita M. Pestana won in the best first work category, and ‘Sopa Fria’ by Marta Monteiro was named the best animated short film.

The jury consisted of singers Surma and Laura Rui, director Leandro Ribeiro, and actress Ana Vilaça.

The awards ceremony took place tonight at the School of Arts and Crafts in Ovar, located in the Aveiro district, concluding the 8th season of Shortcutz Ovar, which featured an official selection of 25 short films shown over the past year, with the filmmakers in attendance.

The 9th edition, part of the Ovar/Culture program, has upcoming sessions scheduled for September 25, October 30, and November 27.

The international Shortcutz network aims to support the new generation of filmmakers by showcasing their works and facilitating regular engagement with audiences. In Portugal, Shortcutz Ovar has been held since 2017, focusing on promoting Portuguese productions.
