30% of survivors will suffer from disability.

This week, the General Directorate of Health (DGS) released a statement on social media providing “general information about Stroke (AVC)” that people should be aware of. It is noted that this condition is “common”, as “one in every four to six people worldwide will experience a stroke in their lifetime”

Another crucial fact to remember is that “a stroke can affect anyone – men and women, children and the elderly can be victims”

The DGS highlighted that a stroke “occurs suddenly”, emphasizing that “most seem like an immediate ‘attack’, with sudden symptoms and disability”. This condition “can be debilitating”, and “almost 30% of survivors will suffer from permanent disability”

A Stroke “can be fatal”, as “nearly 30% of people who experience a stroke end up dying due to this condition”.

Stroke “can be prevented” and “is treatable”

However, it is also essential to be aware that a stroke “can be prevented”. In the same post—via Facebook—the General Directorate of Health emphasized that “half of strokes can be prevented by controlling blood pressure and quitting smoking”

A Stroke “is treatable”, noting that “appropriate treatment in the acute phase can reduce death and disability rates by 50%”.

Finally, the DGS stresses that “a life without disability is possible”: “70% of people who experience a stroke can lead an independent life with early treatment and rehabilitation”
