The sub-regional command source informed that “the victim was a recreational fisherman who was with friends when he fell into the water and was rescued by his companions.”
The fisherman is suspected to have “felt unwell” before being assisted by his friends until emergency services arrived. These services, which were activated at 11:31, included Monção firefighters and a Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) team, who “performed resuscitation maneuvers,” but “were unable to reverse the situation,” according to the same source.
The death was pronounced on the scene by the VMER team, and the victim’s body was transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Viana do Castelo.
Sixteen operatives were present at the scene, supported by six vehicles, including Marine Police, Monção Volunteer Firefighters, an Immediate Life Support ambulance from Valença, the VMER from Alto Minho, and the GNR.
