A 31-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in Amadora on suspicion of sexually abusing his six-year-old niece.
In a statement, the authorities reported that the victim’s father had lodged a complaint with the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), prompting the involvement of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ).
Investigators quickly ensured the victim’s safety by separating her from the suspect and gathering evidence.
According to the PJ, the investigation revealed that the sexual abuses allegedly occurred during the first two weeks of April at the residence where the girl and her uncle lived under very poor conditions, along with other family members, including children.
The man reportedly exploited his familial relationship and the trust he had gained from the child to subject her to significant sexual acts during moments when other family members were absent or distracted.
The crimes were uncovered only after the girl confided in her father, who resides in a different home.
Following his initial judicial hearing, the suspect was remanded in custody, with preventive detention being the chosen measure due to the severity of the case.
