
The document approved today by the Superior Council of Internal Security, which is now proceeding to parliament, reveals that 23,509 inquiries are expected to be filed in 2024, representing 62.5%. Out of a total of 37,592 concluded inquiries, only 13.9%, equivalent to 5,214 cases, resulted in charges.
Incidents recorded by authorities slightly decreased, with the year 2024 marked by 25,919 cases related to domestic violence. Despite a 0.5% decrease, domestic violence and simple voluntary bodily harm remain the categories with the highest number of reported cases last year.
Geographically, there are districts where reports of this crime increased, such as Castelo Branco, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Porto, Santarém, Setúbal, Viseu, and the Azores. Most of the accused are over the age of 25, with 7% being between 16 and 24 years old.
Regarding arrests, security forces recorded 2,402 individuals detained on suspicion of domestic violence, 157 fewer than in 2023. The report highlights that nearly half (41.6%) of these individuals were caught in the act.
In the context of arrests, domestic violence continues to account for the majority of electronic surveillance measures, comprising 57.1% of the total.
