
A 90-year-old man drowned today in S. Martinho do Porto, in the municipality of Alcobaça, district of Leiria, according to the Oeste Sub-Regional Command of Relief Operations.
The man “was part of a group of elderly people from an institution visiting the beach and was reportedly a victim of drowning,” Emanuel Soto, commander of the S. Martinho do Porto Firefighters, told Agência Lusa.
The body of the man “was spotted by beachgoers, floating in an area further away from where the rest of the group was located, at the mouth of the river connecting Salir do Porto to S. Martinho do Porto,” the official stated.
The alert was raised at 11:56 AM, and death was declared on-site by the Emergency Medical Vehicle (VMER) team from the Hospital das Caldas da Rainha.
According to the sub-regional Command, 11 fire brigade personnel from S. Martinho do Porto were present, supported by four vehicles, the VMER team, and the Maritime Police.
