A 72-year-old man was arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) in the municipality of Vidigueira on suspicion of attempted homicide.
According to a statement issued by the PJ on Saturday, the man used “a farming tool handle” to inflict “several injuries on the victim, a 60-year-old woman.”
The victim was transported to Beja Hospital.
The PJ further explained that the assault occurred “within the context of a marital relationship,” characterized by longstanding episodes of discord, arguments, and violence.
“However, today, the discord intensified and the violence escalated to a potentially fatal level, were it not for the prompt intervention of a third party, which prevented the continuation of the assault,” the statement noted.
As part of the investigation, “significant evidence was gathered, leading to the suspect’s arrest beyond a situation of being caught in the act.”
The suspect was brought before the competent judicial authorities and was subjected to the preventive detention measure.
