“This meeting, organized to make every effort to restore full normality in bilateral relations, was clearly constructive, leaving a positive expectation that the current situation can be overcome,” states a brief note following the meeting in Lisbon.
The note references the August 15 statement, in which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) condemned the expulsion of the Lusa agency, RTP, and RDP from Guinea-Bissau, describing it as “highly reprehensible and unjustifiable,” and announced plans to seek explanations from the Guinean government.
Following this, the MNE reports that there were “several contacts” and that today there was an opportunity to personally receive the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guinea-Bissau at the Palácio das Necessidades.
In the August 15 statement, the Portuguese executive asserted that, “aware of the importance of these media organizations’ work for the populations of both countries and for the Lusophone community in general, it will do everything to reverse such a decision.”
The government also stated that it is monitoring “the situation with the administrations of Lusa, RTP, and RDP.”
The delegations of the Lusa agency, RTP, and RDP were expelled from Guinea-Bissau, their broadcasts suspended on the same day, and the representatives were instructed to leave the country by Tuesday, by decision of the Guinean government, with no reasons provided.
