The ‘Zero Tolerance at the Wheel’ campaign, organized by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the Public Security Police (PSP), and the National Republican Guard (GNR), will include operations in Guarda (today and August 20), Elvas (21), Portalegre (22), and Tomar (25).

In Portugal, “in 2023, one in four drivers who died in traffic accidents had a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 0.5 g/l, and three out of four of these drivers had a level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l,” authorities noted in a joint statement.

“Of the total traffic accident victims who underwent autopsies, 23% had a blood alcohol level above the legally permitted limit, of which 73% exceeded the level considered a crime,” the statement added.

Authorities warn that “driving under the influence of alcohol causes various disruptions, particularly at the cognitive and information processing levels, as well as alterations in the ability to react to unforeseen events and motor coordination.”

This will be the eighth of 11 campaigns planned for this year as part of the 2025 PNF, which envisions monthly actions.
