Nearly 4,000 firefighters continue to battle wildfires that have been devastating mainland Portugal for over two weeks, primarily affecting the central and northern regions of the country.
In addition to the hectares already consumed and damages caused, the fires have claimed two more lives this year: Carlos Dâmaso, a former local official of Vila Franca de Deão in Guarda, who was attempting to prevent the flames from reaching his family’s property, and firefighter Daniel Agrelo, aged 44, who died in a firefighting vehicle accident in Covilhã.
The funerals of both victims are scheduled for this Tuesday, August 19.
Mainland Portugal remains on alert status until 11:59 PM today.
