Mercadona has announced its latest expansion plans with a new store opening in Vale Sepal, Leiria, on September 11. The supermarket chain considers this development a significant move in strengthening its presence in the region.
“Mercadona will be opening in Vale Sepal, Leiria, at Avenida Francisco Rodrigues Lobo nº 132, on September 11. This new opening represents an important step in reinforcing Mercadona’s presence in the municipality, bringing us closer to our ‘Chefes’ (customers),” the company stated in a press release.
The company announced that “this new supermarket will create around 90 new jobs, offering stable and quality employment with permanent contracts from the first day, hence contributing to local job creation.”
What will the new supermarket be like?
According to Mercadona, the new store “will have a sales area of about 1,900 m², featuring wide aisles for comfortable shopping, with sections like Charcuterie, Fish Market, Pastry and Bakery, Perfumery, Butchers, Fruits and Vegetables, and Ready-to-Eat, similar to the existing store near Parque Verde.”
“The opening of this new supermarket, which will be the second in the municipality and the third for Mercadona in the Leiria district, reflects the ongoing national expansion plan of the company,” the release also noted.
Mercadona to reach Lisbon this year (with two stores)
The Spanish brand’s expansion plan indicates that in 2025, Mercadona will arrive in Lisbon, planning to open two stores. One of the stores, located in Alta de Lisboa, will also house a new corporate office to complement the one in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the company’s Portuguese headquarters are. The second store will be situated in Quinta do Lambert, Lumiar.

Currently, Mercadona operates 60 stores and two logistics centers in Póvoa de Varzim and Almeirim. With the planned openings this year, the company will end the year with 70 stores across the nation.
After five years in Portugal, Mercadona reports having created 7,000 jobs “through permanent contracts from day one and attractive salaries.”
“In 2024, Mercadona invested a total of 219 million euros in Portugal, achieved sales of 1,778 million euros, and contributed 237 million euros in taxes through its Portuguese company Irmãdona Supermercados, headquartered in Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto),” the statement adds.
The company projects an investment of over 157 million euros and plans to open 10 new stores in 2025.
