Attendant suspected of extorting money from drivers is detained in Nazaré

A 30-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in Nazaré for threatening and insulting a police officer, the Public Security Police (PSP) reported on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Leiria District Command of the Public Security Police explained that the incident occurred at 1:30 pm during the 9th stage of the Volta a Portugal. One of the officers involved in the event’s security spotted the man, who was already known for his activity as a car attendant, “suspected of extorting money from several drivers seeking to park in a public lot in the village and complained of such threatening behavior.”

When the officer intervened, the individual became “completely agitated,” immediately insulting and “threatening to kill” the officer. Despite warnings, he did not change his behavior, and as a result, he was “placed under arrest.”

The suspect then attempted to flee but was “subsequently intercepted, restrained using physical force, handcuffed, and taken to the local station for formal arrest processing.”

The PSP officer involved had to be taken to Alcobaça Hospital due to some abrasions on an arm and knee caused by the suspect’s resistance.

“It is noteworthy that the detainee continued to be violent, and in one of several fits of rage, repeatedly kicked the door of a detention room,” the PSP statement added.

The man was notified to appear in the Nazaré Judicial Court on the morning of August 18, where he appeared. “The process will follow its course,” concluded the Leiria District Command, stating that “this police intervention reinforced the public tranquility of the resident and visiting community of the village of Nazaré, as well as local merchants.”
