From Japanese manga to Franco-Belgian comics and American pop culture classics, the latest releases from Devir offer a diverse program that spans genres, styles, and audiences. Highlights include new volumes of ‘Batman’, ‘The Walking Dead’, and ‘Punpun’, along with titles that conclude the eight-volume Angoulême collection, announced the publisher.
This month sees the arrival of ‘O Caderno Azul’ by André Juillard (Angoulême Best Album Award 1995), a “subtle and melancholic narrative” that “intertwines art with the silences of everyday life,” focusing on a solitary man documenting his thoughts and sketches of his lover in a notebook.
The collection continues in September with ‘Silêncio’ by Didier Comès (Angoulême Best Album Award 1981), a poetic and somber graphic novel set in the Ardennes, centered on a mute and naive young man marginalized and exploited by his community.
In October, ‘Anaïs Nin’ by Léonie Bischoff (Angoulême Public Award 2021) will be published, depicting the intimate and creative life of the Franco-Cuban writer, particularly her intense relationship with Henry Miller and June, as drawn from her diaries.
November brings ‘O Gosto do Cloro’ by Bastien Vivès (Angoulême Revelation Award 2009), a visual and contemplative narrative with minimal dialogue and an aquatic atmosphere, following the development of a relationship between a young man and a woman he meets at a swimming pool.
In December, the Angoulême cycle concludes with ‘Kiki de Montparnasse’ by Catel & Bocquet (Angoulême Essential Award 2008), a comic biography of the 1920s Parisian muse, model, and companion of photographer Man Ray, known for her independence and audacity.
The first three volumes of the collection, already published by Devir, were the ‘Nikopol Trilogy’ by Enki Bilal, ‘Alack Sinner: Police or Detective’ by Muñoz & Sampaio, and ‘O Silêncio de Malka’ by Pellejero & Zentner.
In addition to these titles, all linked to the Franco-Belgian comic tradition, the lineup includes new volumes of some of the most popular manga series among Portuguese readers, such as ‘Astra Lost in Space’ vol. 4 by Kenta Shinohara, ‘Goodnight Punpun’ vols. 4 and 5 by Inio Asano, ‘Children of the Sea’ vol. 3 by Daisuke Igarashi, and ‘Monster’ vol. 6 by Naoki Urasawa, alongside horror titles like ‘Soichi’ vol. 2 by Junji Ito.
The release list is further bolstered by new volumes of some of the most popular manga series among Portuguese readers, including ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’, ‘Chainsaw Man’, ‘Naruto’, ‘Dragon Ball’, ‘One Piece’, ‘My Hero Academia’, ‘Demon Slayer’, ‘Blue Exorcist’, and ‘Frieren’.
In the American segment, the publisher will continue to release best-selling titles like ‘The Walking Dead’ vol. 6 by Robert Kirkman and ‘The Nice House on the Lake’ vol. 2 by James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno.
The DC Comics hero ‘Batman’ returns in full force, with the publication of volumes 02 to 06 of the saga written by Grant Morrison, introducing Damian Wayne as Robin, exploring Bruce Wayne’s psychological limits, and marking the legacy transition to Dick Grayson.
