Burnt area in Chaves is already around 5,000 hectares

The sub-regional commander for Alto Tâmega and Barroso, Artur Mota, indicated that the fire, which entered Chaves on Tuesday through the cross-border village of Cambedo da Raia, is estimated to have consumed an area of around 5,000 hectares.

The flames have engulfed brushwood, forest, and areas of olive groves, chestnut trees, and vineyards.

This morning, the fire entered a resolution phase, but it significantly reignited in the afternoon near the Outeiro Seco business park, burning close to buildings, and also in the Bustelo area.

By 8 PM, according to Artur Mota, the fire had two active fronts, with the Vila Verde da Raia front yielding to efforts after crossing the Tâmega River.

The other front advanced towards the industrial area of Cocanha, where it threatened several businesses and consumed tons of wood intended for sale.

On site, employees and business owners were seen using hoses to put out the fire as it reached buildings, including a printing shop and an agricultural products store, with assistance from firefighters.

Artur Mota stated that the night would involve extensive work on consolidation and mop-up efforts, focusing on hot spots and reactivations.

By 8:30 PM, the website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection reported 500 personnel, 158 ground vehicles, and four aircraft at the scene.

Strong winds are presenting a major challenge in battling the flames.

On Monday, the fire had already crossed the border in the area of Vilar de Perdizes, Montalegre municipality.
