59 new fires today. Piódão and Castelo Rodrigo are the most concerning.

According to the national commander of Emergency and Civil Protection, Mário Silvestre, from midnight to 5 p.m., there were “59 incidents, six of which occurred overnight,” and the active incidents involved “2,258 personnel, 711 vehicles, and 38 aerial resources.”

In an update at the headquarters of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) in Carnaxide (Oeiras) at 7 p.m., Mário Silvestre stated that “two incidents are of greater concern,” particularly the “one in Piódão,” covering “a significantly extensive burned area, with a fire perimeter currently around 290 kilometers.”

“Therefore, it is a challenging and difficult task, consolidating many hot spots and addressing numerous fire zones, requiring extensive effort from the personnel on site,” emphasized the national commander.

The spread of this fire today “was significantly reduced compared to previous days,” resulting in “a much more stable, though still active, fire with much work needed in the coming hours,” he added.

The commander also noted that a “more favorable situation for combat” is expected overnight.

The other ongoing fire is in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, where “1,861 personnel are engaged, with 620 vehicles and 25 aerial resources.”

“At the time of data collection, the Portel fire was also ongoing but had already entered the resolution phase,” he noted.
