After receiving assistance and stabilization on the scene, the firefighter was airlifted by an INEM helicopter to the Burns Unit at the Hospitals of the University of Coimbra, stated the municipality of the Guarda district in a Facebook post.
The firefighter, a full member of the local fire department, sustained serious injuries following an incident in which a fire service vehicle caught fire while battling flames that erupted on Wednesday in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo and affected the neighboring municipalities of Almeida and Pinhel.
In the same post, the municipality of Pinhel expressed “its sorrow and embarrassment regarding the accident involving a Pinhel firefighters’ vehicle.”
The municipality also expressed “its concern for the health of this peacekeeper who, in fulfilling his mission, risked his own life.”
In light of the situation, the City Council announced the cancellation of today’s scheduled activities as part of the City Festivities.
The municipality also expressed “wishes for a speedy recovery, standing in solidarity with the injured firefighter, his family, and the entire active body of Pinhel Volunteer Firefighters who, today, experienced yet another day of struggle and pain, in pursuit of safeguarding the lives and property of populations affected by the fires.”
