Students, make the most of your last days of vacation: classes are about to begin.
The exact day has not been set yet, but it will be between September 11 and 15, thus, less than a month from now, according to dispatch no. 8368/2024, published on July 25 in Diário da República.
The same dispatch outlines the start and end of the remaining school periods for primary and secondary education, as well as for public preschool institutions.
The first term of the 2025/2026 academic year will end on December 17, 2025, a Wednesday – a date pushed back by one day compared to the initial schedule as indicated in the above-mentioned dispatch.
Students will then enjoy nearly three weeks of break, returning on January 5 of the new year, a Monday, to schools – another date that has been moved forward.
Therefore, students will practically have the same number of school days as before the dispatch.

The Christmas break begins a day later on December 17, and classes will resume on January 5, 2026.

The Carnival holidays are also set in the new dispatch: from February 16 to 18 (Monday to Wednesday).
The end of the second term is on March 27, 2026, a Friday, and students return to classes on April 13, Monday, for the final three months of the academic year.
The end of the third term varies depending on whether students have national exams.
For 9th, 11th, and 12th grades, classes conclude on June 5 (Friday), allowing students time to prepare for exams.
Other students, in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th grades, finish on June 12 (Friday), a week later as usual.
Preschool and 1st cycle primary education institutions will conclude the academic year on June 30, 2026, Tuesday.
Below is the table published by the government in Diário da República, summarizing all these dates (except the Carnival holidays):
