A man who was critically injured in a fire in Sabugal on Tuesday and was transferred to Hospital de São João in Porto has died early today, according to hospital sources.

The man had burns covering 75% of his body and had other pre-existing health issues.

The worker, who had been transferred to Hospital de São João in Porto, remained in a “critical clinical condition” as of Thursday.

The 45-year-old operative from Afocelca, a forestry protection company owned by pulp industry groups Altri and Navigator, was seriously injured while battling the rural fire in Sabugal. The fire began on Friday, the 15th, and has been declared under control after spreading to other municipalities.

The victim was stabilized on-site by emergency teams and was then transported by helicopter by the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) to Hospital de São João.

The same fire also resulted in the death of a former mayor of Vila Franca do Deão.
