Almost 2,300 fight fires. Piódão and Pedrógão? “Major concern”

According to José Ribeiro, the Deputy National Commander of Emergency and Civil Protection, a total of “57 incidents” were recorded between midnight and 5 p.m., with 12 occurring during the night. These were primarily in the northern region of the country, though some were also reported in the central area.

“Currently, we have 2,258 personnel deployed, supported by 754 vehicles and 30 aircraft,” stated the operational leader during a briefing held at the headquarters of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) in Carnaxide (Oeiras) at 7 p.m.

Ribeiro further mentioned that, at that time, there were “three incidents” causing significant concern due to their complexity.

One of these situations involves “the Piódão incident, in Coimbra,” which has already extended into the Castelo Branco and Guarda areas, mobilizing “1,603 personnel, 513 vehicles, and 18 aircraft.”

“This afternoon, two more fires broke out in the Pedrógão Grande area, one in São Vicente and another in Graça,” he added, noting that in São Vicente, there were 410 personnel, 116 vehicles, and 16 aircraft, while in Graça, there were 189 personnel, 47 vehicles, and three aircraft.

“Therefore, in these three incidents, we have a total of 2,159 personnel, 726 vehicles, and 29 aircraft,” he concluded.
