Fire in Cacém residential building injures 21

Twenty-one people were injured in a fire that broke out this Friday, August 22, in a residential building in Cacém, Sintra municipality.

The Agualva-Cacém Volunteer Firefighters confirmed to Notícias ao Minuto that all those injured were transported to Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca, commonly known as Amadora-Sintra.

The injured suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital as a precaution due to smoke inhalation.

The fire originated in a room of an apartment on the first floor of the building, causing panic throughout as the smoke spread.

The incident included children among the injured.

Eight Displaced

In statements to a local news outlet, the Agualva-Cacém Fire Department Commander, Carlos Santos, reported that an inspection of the building indicated no structural damage; only the unit affected by the fire was left uninhabitable.

He confirmed that eight people, seven adults, and one child, have been displaced.

The fire alert was raised at 12:33 p.m. On-site, there were 41 personnel supported by 17 vehicles, according to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) website.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

A video on the ‘Vigilantes da Estrada’ Facebook page showed smoke emerging from the multi-story building and a person hanging from the window of the top floor.
