The Chega party has announced it will be submitting a request for a parliamentary inquiry into the fires in Portugal and the related business sector, according to its leader André Ventura in Leiria.
“That is exactly what we are going to do. We are going to launch a serious investigation into the fires, and we plan to propose that Parliament undertake this inquiry and recommend legislation that will fundamentally change this issue,” said André Ventura.
In a brief visit to Leiria, before heading to Pedrógão Grande in the district of Leiria where two fires erupted this Saturday, André Ventura stated that “the time has come to take this step forward” by moving towards the “investigation of fires in Portugal, the business surrounding them, and the lack of prevention.”
Ventura explained that it is possible “to conclude whether or not there is a network of business behind this, and a commission of inquiry can accomplish that by summoning former and current government officials, people associated with the fire and wood business, and those involved in land management.”
