During a press meeting in Viseu, where he concluded the first day of the route along the Estrada Nacional 2 (EN2) with a visit to the Feira de São Mateus, José Luís Carneiro emphasized his commitment to “a new approach to regional development and cohesion.”
“We need to adopt territorial development contracts with tax incentives and attract direct foreign investment,” he explained, adding that Viseu municipality has “some of the best conditions to function as a major platform for economic, social, and cultural development, and for the projection of this entire region.”
The Secretary-General of the PS explained that he aims to build “a model equivalent to CIM (Intermunicipal Communities) in various territories of the country, corresponding to the five regional coordination and development commissions.”
“Viseu will be one of these centers for the establishment of territorial development contracts, seeking to create better economic opportunities, more employment opportunities, retain the most qualified workforce in the country, particularly the younger, and provide dignified living conditions for those who invest, create wealth, and wish to live their lives in these territories,” he added.
José Luís Carneiro set off today from kilometer zero, in Chaves, along the EN2.
The EN2 spans 738 kilometers, connecting Trás-os-Montes to the Algarve through the interior of the country and has become a tourist route that attracts many domestic and foreign tourists.
On August 20, 2019, former Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the PS, António Costa, also embarked on a journey from Chaves along the EN2, arguing at the time that the country must “know how to value” a “great axis of development potential.”
