To ensure that all students can complete compulsory education, the State provides support for students in the first and second brackets of family allowance. This is part of the social school action, as noted by DECO PROTeste.
Who is eligible for social school action?
As stated by the consumer protection organization, “students residing in the national territory who attend public education and whose families meet the defined income thresholds” are eligible for social school action.
“Although there are supports aimed at those with greater needs, there is a set of supports that are universal, regardless of household income. These include meal supports, school insurance, the Happy Crèche program, and free textbooks“, according to information available on the DECO PROTeste website.
Which family allowance bracket qualifies for social school action?
According to the consumer protection organization, the three brackets of social action are determined based on the applicable family allowance brackets:
- The A bracket for social action corresponds to the first bracket of family allowance, meaning students whose families earn no more than 3,564.82 euros annually.
- The B bracket includes students from families with annual incomes between 3,564.82 euros and 7,129.64 euros.
- The C bracket includes students from families with annual incomes ranging from 7,129.64 euros to 12,120.39 euros.
“These are the values applied to applications made in 2025, but it’s the income from the previous year that determines the bracket. Children and young people in the refugee contingent receive assistance corresponding to the first bracket of family allowance,” explains DECO PROTeste.
What does the support include?
Furthermore, according to the consumer protection organization, “meals, transportation, books, school supplies, and study visits are included in the so-called social school action.”
“Students from low-income families are also entitled to economic aid to cover school-related expenses, such as meals, school supplies, study visits, and accommodation. Beneficiaries of these aids are automatically exempt from tuition fees, charges, and other costs, such as diplomas and certificates of qualifications,” the website states.
“Even though registration or its renewal is the time to apply for support, if a family’s circumstances change affecting their family allowance bracket, they can request social school action at any time. The social school action services provide the application form and indicate the necessary documents,” it continues.
