A 51-year-old man was arrested for domestic violence in the municipality of Abrantes, Santarém district, on August 21, as announced by the National Republican Guard (GNR) on Tuesday.
According to the military, the man was arrested following an investigation into domestic violence, which found that he exercised psychological and social violence against the victim, his 57-year-old partner.
The Guard reports that the suspect stalked and controlled the woman through digital means, monitoring her location, which caused the victim to feel “insecurity, fear, and dread,” thus restricting her freedom.
As a result, the investigation led to the arrest of the suspect.
The detainee has since appeared for an initial judicial interrogation and was released with the condition of not contacting the victim, either directly or through another person.
Last year alone, the PSP arrested 1,281 people for domestic violence, marking a 32% increase from the previous year, with 15,781 complaints registered, an increase of 1.8%.
The PSP emphasizes the importance of victims and witnesses remaining willing to report domestic violence situations, noting that “all reported situations are immediately subject to risk assessment, so that the necessary security and protection measures for the victim can be promptly adopted in each specific case.”
This security force indicates that domestic violence complaints can be made by anyone via the email “vi****************@*sp.pt” or in person at PSP stations.
Violent behaviors, whether physical, verbal, or psychological, constitute the crime of domestic violence.
