Registration for the liberals’ event, titled “A´gosto da Liberdade,” will cost 25 euros and is scheduled for Saturday in Albufeira. In 2024, this initiative, which took place in Quarteira, saw participation from approximately 150 members.
“The party will donate the proceeds from the registrations to the victims of the Arganil fire, which started on August 13, the largest ever recorded, burning for 11 days and affecting an area of 64,451 hectares,” announced IL in a statement.
The leader of IL, Mariana Leitão, elected in July, will outline the “party priorities for the new political agenda,” aiming to show the Portuguese people that “a different country is possible, with governance based on liberal principles and the utmost respect for individual freedom,” the party states.
“A country unable to implement structural reforms, like those proposed by IL, will always fall into the same errors and problems,” IL adds.
This will be the fifth consecutive year that IL will hold its political ‘rentrée’ in the Algarve, a type of party initiative marking the resumption of parliamentary work after the summer holidays. Last year, when Rui Rocha was still the party leader, the event took place in Quarteira, following previous editions in Armação de Pêra, Albufeira, and Portimão.
Last year, Rui Rocha had established the party’s position on the State Budget negotiations for 2025, ensuring that it would not support a “grapefruit” document that did not focus on economic growth, tax reduction, or the reduction of bureaucracy.
Mainland Portugal has been affected by multiple large-scale rural fires since July, particularly in the Northern and Central regions.
The fires have resulted in four deaths, including a firefighter, and several injuries, some severe, and have totally or partially destroyed primary and secondary residences, as well as agricultural and livestock operations and forest areas.
According to provisional official data, by August 23, around 250,000 hectares had burned in the country, over 57,000 of which were in the fire that began in Arganil.
