The man who shot his brother-in-law during an argument on Wednesday and subsequently barricaded himself inside his home in Barreiro, Setúbal district, has surrendered to the authorities and been detained, confirmed the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) to Notícias ao Minuto.
Witnesses reported that the suspect fired around eight shots, with four striking the victim—three in the lower back and one in the buttock.
The victim was transported to the Hospital do Barreiro and, according to PSP, is in stable condition, “not in life-threatening danger.”
The alert was issued around 1:30 PM on a street in Barreiro Velho, near the new PSP station in Barreiro.
The 36-year-old man barricaded himself at home for several hours, prompting the PSP to mount an operation at the location with members of the Special Police Unit, the Intervention Corps, the special operations group, and negotiators.
Setúbal PSP Deputy Commissioner Leandro Tomeno explained to journalists that the suspect surrendered without incident, exiting the residence with his hands raised, accompanied by his wife, with no hostages inside.
Initially, there were two children in the home, but they left for their grandmother’s house through negotiation. “Fortunately, the situation is resolved,” he noted, highlighting the decisive action of the authorities.
Negotiations with the suspect were conducted via telephone.
The detainee was taken to the PSP station in Barreiro, and the case is now under the jurisdiction of the Polícia Judiciária, which has already visited the scene.
The origin of the incident has not been confirmed, but it is believed that the shooting occurred following an argument between in-laws. This altercation is thought to have arisen after the victim threatened to report the suspect for allegedly having a warehouse of counterfeit goods.
Following these threats, the suspect reportedly retrieved a weapon and shot his brother-in-law. PSP confirmed to Notícias ao Minuto that the weapon used in the crime has not yet been found.
