“The President of the Republic is entitled to his position as a citizen. It seems somewhat imprudent for the President of the Republic to refer to one of our greatest allies, the United States of America, to the President of the United States of America, in such a manner, with the potential to create a severe diplomatic conflict,” he stated.
During a press conference at the party headquarters in Lisbon, André Ventura was asked about the head of state’s comments on Wednesday at the PSD Summer University. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that Donald Trump functions today as a “Soviet asset”, by favoring the Russian Federation in the war against Ukraine.
The leader of Chega considered that the U.S. is “from a military point of view, from an economic point of view, and from a civilizational point of view, one of the greatest allies” of Portugal, countries that have “a long military relationship” and both integrate NATO.
André Ventura argued that Marcelo was “extremely imprudent in making such categorizations about the president of a country that is a military and political ally” of Portugal.
The statements by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who considered that his American counterpart, Donald Trump, acts as a “Soviet asset” by favoring Russia, reached an international audience.

The leader of Chega also criticized Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for welcoming the “President of Brazil, who was imprisoned for corruption, with open arms”.
“I think there is a certain contradiction here that frankly leads to the President starting to lose some national and international credibility. To be frank, this is only not generating more international conflict because, without wanting to be offensive, nobody in the international sphere takes the words of the Portuguese President very seriously anymore, otherwise this would be a very, very serious diplomatic conflict, which could bring serious consequences for Portugal from various points of view,” he argued.
On Wednesday, the President of the Republic participated in the PSD Summer University, a training initiative for young members that runs until Sunday in Castelo de Vide (Portalegre).
