The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) has reported that a suspect appeared today for an initial judicial interrogation at the Tribunal de Beja.
The court has imposed the strictest measure of coercion, and the man has been taken to the Estabelecimento Prisional de Beja, where he will remain as the legal process unfolds, according to the same source.
In a statement released on Thursday, the PJ noted that the suspected perpetrator of the arson, which occurred on the 18th, was detained by the Southern Directorate of the criminal investigation police following the acquisition of significant evidence.
“The suspect, without a plausible justification, ignited the fire using direct flame (lighter) on a neglected rural plot covered with low herbaceous vegetation, located at Colina do Carmo,” stated the PJ in one of the city’s parishes.
The fire consumed four hectares, but due to the early detection by a firefighter, it did not escalate further thanks to the prompt intervention of Beja’s firefighters.
According to the Judiciária, firefighters were able to swiftly extinguish the fire, mitigating the threat it posed to nearby scattered homes.
A police source revealed, when contacted on Thursday, that the alleged arsonist was detained on Wednesday in Beja.
