Duarte Borges described the campaign as “quite difficult” due to weather conditions, which necessitated “an increased number of treatments” to ensure good fruiting and at least some production.
Many treatments entail significant expenses. “It was a very expensive campaign, requiring a substantial investment in purchasing production factors to achieve a healthy output,” he stated.
The apple harvest commenced at the beginning of this week. Despite reduced production and smaller sizes, AFUVOPA assures that quality remains high.
In the municipality of Carrazeda de Ansiães, 800 hectares of apple orchards can produce 30,000 tons of apples in a good year, according to local authorities, making it the largest producer in Trás-os-Montes.
This is a sector where 40% of farmers are young. Duarte Borges noted that this number has been gradually increasing, which does not compensate for the number of older people leaving the profession. “More young people are needed for a renewal of the land ownership structure in the municipality. It is also crucial for maintaining production and activities in the area,” he said.
To achieve this, he advocates for a “more attractive” support program for young people since investing in agriculture requires “investment” and “working capital,” which is “difficult” without assistance.
The apple is being highlighted this weekend in Carrazeda de Ansiães. The 28th edition of the Apple, Wine, and Olive Oil Fair began today and will continue until Sunday. The primary product in the municipality is wine, with 2800 hectares of vineyards, followed by olive oil with 1920 hectares.
These three products can generate more than “25 million euros” for the municipality in a normal production year, as stated by local authorities.
The mayor, João Gonçalves, emphasized that besides promoting agricultural products, the event also showcases all the potential of the municipality, becoming “a huge attraction” and therefore “sparking curiosity among visitors.”
The fair features 120 exhibitors, including crafts, cheese, and cured meats.
In addition to evening concerts with DAMA, Xutos e Pontapés, and João Pedro Pais, entertainment includes an ethnographic parade on Sunday.
