On the ‘summer’ basket, which products became more expensive? And cheaper?

As the week concluded, a new analysis from DECO PROteste introduced changes in the summer basket, a special assessment including just a dozen food items.

Experts noted that from August 20 to August 27, more food items increased in price compared to those that either retained or decreased in price.

The extra analysis covers 12 commonly used summer products, specifically pork steaks, whole chicken, sea bass, gilt-head bream, horse mackerel, extra virgin olive oil, Frankfurt sausages, ground roasted coffee, curly lettuce, Roma tomatoes, onions, and red potatoes.

Which items increased and decreased in price?

The consumer advocacy association’s analysis revealed that the items with the highest price increases were Frankfurt sausages (up by 12.97%), onions (10.01%), and curly lettuce, which rose by 3.57%.

The analysis further noted only three products experienced a price decrease: horse mackerel (down by 19%), ground roasted coffee (-15.33%), and gilt-head bream (-0.62%).

Experts have concluded that both extra virgin olive oil and whole chicken maintained their prices over the past week.

Despite most products experiencing a price increase, the total cost of this week’s summer basket decreased, now costing 1.17 euros less than the previous week.

How is the inflation rate?

A preliminary estimate released this Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicates that the inflation rate increased by 2.8% in August, 0.2 percentage points higher than July’s change.

The institute’s gathered data, still subject to revision, points to an acceleration of the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

After July’s index was 2.64% higher than the same month last year, the rate has now risen to 2.78% in August, as stated in the INE’s statistical summary.

The core inflation indicator – the total index excluding unprocessed food and energy products – recorded a 2.5% change compared to August of last year. This change is the same as in July.

“The variation of the index related to energy products was -0.2% (-1.1% in July), and the index for unprocessed food products accelerated again to 7.0% (6.1% the previous month),” details the INE.

The overall month-to-month CPI variation was negative, with the monthly difference standing at -0.2%. This decline was smaller than the one from June to July, which was -0.4%.

The INE will publish the definitive data on August’s inflation on September 10, when it will be known whether the provisional values now released remain the same or undergo revision.
