Government starts receiving parties tomorrow to discuss the budget and Palestine

Meetings will take place at the Assembly of the Republic, starting with Chega at 9:00 AM, followed by Livre at 10:30 AM, and the Liberal Initiative at 12:00 PM. The meetings will continue with other parties in the following days.

From the government side, the meetings will include the Ministers of Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, and Parliamentary Affairs, Carlos Abreu Amorim.

During these meetings, the government will present its “main options” for the State Budget for 2026 to the three parties, communicate its stance on the Middle East conflict, and discuss the laws on foreigners and nationality.

“Various issues related to the creation of new parishes” will also be assessed.

This will mark the first round of meetings between the government and parliamentary parties on these four topics, with a meeting already scheduled for this Friday with the PS and another for next Wednesday with the PCP. Meetings with the remaining parties will be scheduled “as soon as the agenda allows,” stated the executive.

These meetings were announced last week by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, who noted that they are not budget negotiations but rather the start of a “tour with parliamentary groups and single deputies on various issues.”

Regarding budgetary matters, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro predicted this weekend that the discussion on the next State Budget will be “relatively simple,” while the leader of Chega, André Ventura, also considered that there are “more favorable conditions” this year for reaching consensus on this matter.

Meanwhile, PS Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro has already expressed his willingness in May to support the State Budget presented by the government but warned this past weekend that if the document includes labor law changes advocated by the executive, his party will vote against it.

Regarding the recognition of the State of Palestine, Luís Montenegro announced on July 31 that the government would consult the President of the Republic and the parliamentary parties to “consider undertaking Palestinian recognition” at the United Nations General Assembly, between September 23 and 29.
