A 47-year-old Turkish national was rescued by a Portuguese Air Force helicopter from a merchant ship approximately 80 kilometers off the coast of Figueira da Foz on Tuesday morning after showing symptoms consistent with the onset of a heart attack.
“Following an alert received by MRCC Lisbon via VHF, indicating that a crew member of a merchant ship required medical assistance due to symptoms indicating the onset of a heart attack, the rescue was ordered after evaluation by the Urgent Patient Observation Center (CODUMAR),” the Navy revealed in a statement.
The man was airlifted by a Portuguese Air Force helicopter and subsequently transported by INEM to a hospital facility.
The Navy emphasized that through its Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centers, it “ensures a continuous response within national maritime areas to incidents that may occur, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
