The return to school after vacations often brings with it anxieties, fears, and unrest. Schedules, routines, switching to a new school, fear of not making friends, and worry about academic success can cause feelings of fear, anguish, and insecurity in children (and some parents as well).
Several tips can aid in the process, such as discussing the topic positively, conveying security and confidence, never referring to school as a ‘boogeyman’ or punishment, talking about what will happen, selecting school supplies together, visiting the school before the start day, and more.
To assist parents in this ‘task,’ numerous books are available at bookstores. Here are five suggestions:
- ‘O Fio Invisível’ by Míriam Tirado with illustrations by Marta Moreno
This story explores the bonds that unite us, the “invisible thread” that connects us to all we love. It teaches us that true love transcends time and space, helping to strengthen our bond with those we cherish, supporting us through separations (start of the school year, mornings, sleeping alone, family separations) and aiding in the process of grieving a loved one. - ‘O Primeiro Dia de Escola’ by Caroline Roque and illustrations by Grégoire Mabire
A tender and humorous story to help children facing doubts and fears, as they seek inner courage to follow their heart and path. - ‘O Pintainho Pipo Vai à Escola’ by Nick Denchfield and Ant Parker
Today is Pintainho Pipo’s first day of school, but he’s overslept and is now in a hurry. Will he make it in time for class? A very entertaining book, perfect for babies and children up to 3 years old. - ‘Eu Vou Fazer Um Amigo’ by Sandhya Prabhat and Darren Chetty
An original and heartwarming take on the quest for friendship, ideal for children joining a new school. - ‘Tomás na Escola dos Grandes’ by Marisa Lemos and Sofia Cardoso
School is starting, and Tomás is entering the first grade — the big school. Everyone seems enthusiastic, but he isn’t… The big school is intimidating! Is it really? Sometimes growing up is scary… but it brings many opportunities!
