Médio Tejo strengthens integrated civil protection system

The president of CIM Médio Tejo announced a significant civil protection and public safety investment of 6 million euros in the region.

This effort includes 11 vehicles, complete with modules and a boat, valued at approximately 4 million euros, along with 500,000 euros allocated for 272 individual equipment items, ranging from helmets to boots, as confirmed by Manuel Jorge Valamatos.

Valamatos, who also serves as the mayor of Abrantes, emphasized that this initiative is based on a cooperative and shared model among the 11 municipalities of Médio Tejo. The aim is to equip the entire CIM with differentiated equipment and modules, which will be distributed across municipalities, ensuring interoperability and serving the Médio Tejo community.

“This is about optimizing resources, equipment, and funding. We’ve invested 4 million euros to serve our community collectively and, most importantly, to protect people,” he explained.

During a public event in Tomar, attended by local officials, firefighters, and regional and national civil protection leaders, Manuel Jorge Valamatos called it a historic day for Médio Tejo.

“Today, we demonstrate our unified commitment to prioritize civil protection. We provide our firefighting teams with modern, robust, and versatile resources to safeguard what matters most: people’s lives,” he stated.

The public tender for acquiring this equipment, worth 4 million euros, was divided into three parts. The first segment focused on the 11 vehicles, assigned in December 2024 for 1.9 million euros plus VAT.

These vehicles, one for each Médio Tejo municipality, are adaptable to different civil protection modules with various capabilities and functions.

The second segment, awarded at 1.6 million euros, covers “11 interchangeable modules” that can be rotated between municipalities. Six modules are for firefighting, one for pumping, one for generating and lighting, one for autonomous breathable air, one for search and rescue, and one for environmental multi-risk protection.

The third segment, valued at approximately 120,000 euros, involves acquiring a multipurpose vessel for search, reconnaissance, rescue, and transport roles.

As part of the integrated civil protection assets of Médio Tejo, with a total value of around 6 million euros, 272 individual protection equipment (EPI) will be delivered to firefighting units by the end of September.

Future investments will target the Caxarias local training unit and the logistical support base of the Médio Tejo sub-regional command in Praia do Ribatejo, Vila Nova da Barquinha.

The project is 85% funded by the community, with the remaining 15% covered by the 11 Médio Tejo municipalities.

CIM Médio Tejo includes the municipalities of Abrantes, Alcanena, Constância, Entroncamento, Ferreira do Zêzere, Mação, Ourém, Sardoal, Tomar, Torres Novas, and Vila Nova da Barquinha in Santarém district.
