The equipment installation protocol, utilizing crime prevention technology, was signed last Thursday with the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), as reported in a statement by the Algarve municipality.
The surveillance cameras will be installed in the historical part of the city, a “priority area” due to its “peculiar characteristics,” according to the Faro district municipality.
The surveillance aims to serve as an auxiliary and complementary tool for security forces, with PSP responsible for managing, monitoring, and handling the data.
According to the Tavira City Council, the system “does not replace” police presence but acts as a complementary tool with a deterrent effect and quick response capability to criminal acts, aiding in suspect identification.
The surveillance respects constitutional rules and citizens’ rights, freedoms, and guarantees, serving as a technological enhancement for the safety and protection of people, animals, and property, emphasizes the municipality.
Tavira is the sixth municipality in the Algarve to implement surveillance equipment in public spaces, with systems already operational in Olhão, Portimão, Loulé, Faro, and Albufeira.
Lagos and Lagoa are other Algarve municipalities that expect to proceed soon with the installation of surveillance systems in various locations within their councils.
