He psychologically and financially abused his grandmother. He was a repeat offender.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on September 10 on suspicion of domestic violence against his grandmother in the town of Montijo, Setúbal.

The arrest followed a domestic violence report, with officers from the Republican National Guard (GNR) discovering that “the aggressor exerted psychological and financial violence against the victim, his 71-year-old grandmother.”

“The individual had previously been detained for the same crime and was subject to coercive measures prohibiting contact, approach, and staying at the victim’s residence,” the security force added in a statement sent to the newsrooms on Saturday.

The GNR emphasized that the individual “disregarded these judicial orders, returning to the victim’s residence and continuing with threatening behaviors, insults, psychological and financial violence, endangering her integrity.”

The young man was brought before the Barreiro Judicial Court and has been placed in preventive detention.

This operation was carried out by the Territorial Command of Setúbal, through the Almada Specific Victims Investigation and Support Unit (NIAVE).

More than 62% of Investigations Filed

It is noteworthy that, according to the Annual Internal Security Report (RASI), more than 62% of investigations related to domestic violence crimes were filed last year.

The document showed 23,509 investigations filed in 2024, equivalent to 62.5%. Of a total of 37,592 investigations concluded, only 13.9%, equivalent to 5,214 investigations, resulted in charges.

The incidents recorded by authorities slightly decreased, with 2024 marking 25,919 cases related to domestic violence. Despite a 0.5% decrease, domestic violence and simple voluntary physical integrity offense crimes are the types with the highest number of reports recorded last year.

Regarding arrests, security forces recorded 2,402 individuals detained on suspicion of domestic violence, 157 fewer than in 2023. The RASI highlighted that nearly half (41.6%) of these detainees were caught in the act.

In the context of detention, the crime of domestic violence continues to represent the majority of electronic surveillance measures, accounting for 57.1% of the total.

The GNR reminds that domestic violence is a public crime and reporting is a collective responsibility. If you need help or are aware of any situation of domestic violence, report it:
