Accompanied by the Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon, Rui Valério, and the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, Parolin recited the “Our Father” and “Hail Mary” prayers in front of dozens of onlookers who joined the moment.
The prayer took place at the site of the September 3 accident, where locals have since left flowers, stuffed animals, and letters featuring heartfelt messages.
Following the prayer, Parolin exchanged brief words with Rui Valério, Carlos Moedas, and citizens who approached him.
The Glória Funicular, one of Lisbon’s historic elevators managed by the municipal company Carris, derailed on September 3, resulting in 16 deaths and dozens of injuries.
Parolin has been in Portugal since Friday and is participating this afternoon in the “Jubileu Compromisso com a Cidade,” an event promoted by the Patriarchate of Lisbon at the Gulbenkian Foundation, attended by civil, municipal, judicial, military, and public security authorities based in the Patriarchate of Lisbon’s territory.
