Sets fire to house where he lived with brother in Figueira da Foz out of “revenge”

A Polícia Judiciária (PJ) detained a 49-year-old man today, suspected of setting fire to the house he shared with a brother in the municipality of Figueira da Foz, Coimbra district.

In a statement, the PJ detailed that the suspect was apprehended by its Central Directorate, “strongly suspected of committing an urban arson,” which occurred late Friday, “at the residence he inhabited with a brother” in Alhadas, Figueira da Foz.

“The fire was ignited using a direct flame with a lighter, allegedly amid family disputes, resulting in the destruction of the residence,” which has been rendered uninhabitable, stated the PJ.

According to the same statement, “the fire endangered adjacent dwellings in the area,” but did not have “tragic consequences due to the prompt and effective response from firefighters and other emergency services.”

“Following investigations carried out by the Central Directorate, which leads the inquiry, a man was identified, who allegedly acted motivated by vengeful feelings towards his brother due to prior disagreements, intending to destroy the dwelling,” it noted.

The suspect was presented for his initial judicial interrogation and was remanded in preventive custody, confirmed a source from the Central Directorate, based in Coimbra, to Lusa agency.
