
“In August 2025, there were 9,775 deaths, a decrease of 114 (-1.2%) compared to the previous month. Compared to the same month in 2024, there was an increase of 536 deaths (+5.8%),” specified the INE.
There were 20 deaths of children under one year, compared to 21 in the same month of 2024.
At the beginning of August, the Direção-Geral da Saúde reported that mainland Portugal recorded 264 excess deaths during the heat alert period, which began on July 25, 21.2% more than expected, mainly among those over 75 and in the North region.
In July 2025, there were 7,693 live births, 507 more (+7.1%) than in June 2025 and 519 more (+7.2%) than in the same month in 2024.
The natural balance was -2,169, indicating an improvement compared to the same month in 2024, when the figure was -2,385.
The INE also noted that there were 4,264 marriages last July, 344 more (+8.8%) than in June and four more (+0.1%) than in July 2024.
