
An emergency alert was issued at 11:10 a.m., reported the Douro Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command.
A representative from Infraestruturas de Portugal confirmed that the accident happened between the Ermida and Rede railway stations at a private level crossing providing access to private properties.
According to the General Command of the National Republican Guard (GNR), the two deceased victims, women aged 62 and 66, were Canadian nationals and were part of a group of people.
“The victims were taking photographs of the approaching train near a level crossing, as reported by our patrol who gathered information from people at the scene,” stated a GNR spokesperson.
The accident took place on Travessa da Ribeira da Rede, noted the GNR.
A total of 15 operatives assisted by eight vehicles were dispatched to the scene, according to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection’s online platform.
