PCP says that the rating increase clashes with the difficult life of the Portuguese

In Vila Nova de Famalicão, during the presentation of CDU candidates for local government offices, Paulo Raimundo humorously remarked that he arrived late to the event due to the large street celebrations related to the ‘rating’ upgrade.

“It’s an A for increases. Increases in food costs, electricity costs, the struggles faced by workers,” he stated.

The financial ratings agency Fitch upgraded Portugal’s rating from A- to A, with a stable outlook, as announced by the Ministry of Finance on Friday.

Fitch cited several reasons for the upgrade, including the ongoing reduction in debt, a balanced budget position, reduced deficits starting from 2026, increased exports, and resilient growth.

According to the government, “this decision is another achievement for Portugal and recognition of the efforts being made by the Government, families, and businesses to promote economic growth, ensure public accounts balance, and continue reducing public debt.”

Paulo Raimundo countered by stating that the reality is that the lives of Portuguese people “are worse,” pointing to examples such as difficulties accessing the National Health Service, the housing “crisis,” and “tight salaries that do not last until the end of the month.”
