“It is with pain and enormous consternation that the Portuguese Army announces the death of a soldier, which occurred early this morning at the Emergency Military Support Regiment in Abrantes,” stated a note sent to Agência Lusa.
The Army reported that the Military Judiciary Police has been notified, and an inquiry has been launched “to determine the causes and circumstances of the incident.”
“The deceased soldier was 24 years old and was a native of Tabuaço, Viseu,” it added.
The branch detailed that “first aid was immediately provided on-site, with INEM activated,” and psychological support was made available to the family and other service members.
“The Portuguese Army deeply regrets this irreparable loss and extends heartfelt condolences to the grieving family, expressing solidarity with all those who shared life and service with the soldier,” the note concluded.
