Lisbon Metropolitan opens with works by Schubert, Shostakovich, and Haydn

The principal conductor Pedro Neves leads a concert featuring Portuguese pianist Vasco Dantas and Russian-Israeli trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov as soloists.

“These are two great soloists who will perform together in Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano and Trumpet, a piece of considerable depth. Additionally, we will experience another facet of this trumpeter, who resides in Paris, as he has developed a transcription. He will play Haydn’s Cello Concerto on a flugelhorn, according to his own transcription,” conductor Pedro Neves stated.

The program concludes with Schubert’s Symphony No. 3, described as “a solid symphony for this type of classical orchestra format.”

The season spans the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, culminating in the premiere of a composition by Simão Costa.

Pianist François-Frédéric Guy, oboist Sally Dean, and soprano Andrea Conangla are among the guest musicians for the season, which extends until July of the following year. It also features soloists from the orchestra, such as violinist Ana Pereira and clarinetist Nuno Silva, alongside guest conductors like Pietari Inkinen, José Eduardo Gomes, Bruno Borralhinho, and Pedro Amaral.

The complete Schumann symphonies, Christmas, New Year, Carnival, and Spring concerts, and programs dedicated to Beethoven, Vivaldi, Borodin, Ravel, and Kodály are among the offerings aimed at the “general public” by the Metropolitana. This year, it emphasizes the project’s academic component by dividing the season into two parts: a professional one by OML and an academic one, yet to be announced.

“This initiative to separate the two parallel seasons aims to provide the audience with a clearer image of what is being achieved at the Metropolitana,” stated the artistic director and principal conductor, Pedro Neves, in an interview.

The Metropolitana oversees the Conservatory of Music, the Professional School, and the National Academy of Orchestra (ANSO), along with OML, which consists of 34 professional musicians.

The 2025/2026 season program of OML is available at www.metropolitana.pt.
