College initiates effort for Tarek, student prevented from coming to Lisbon

A 23-year-old has been accepted into the Master’s program in English and North American Studies but remains unable to leave the Gaza Strip due to a lack of travel authorization, announced the Portuguese higher education institution today.

The faculty plans to hold a position on the Avenida de Berna campus, featuring statements from the administration and the faculty council.

Representatives from the Student Association and Students for Justice in Palestine at NOVA FCSH will also be present.

NOVA aims to reaffirm its commitment to freedom, human dignity, and international cooperation values, “giving voice to a situation that demands urgent response from the international community,” the document stated.

Tarek Al-Farra resides in the Gaza Strip, where he completed his bachelor’s degree and lives with his family, facing “severe mobility restrictions and conditions of great vulnerability due to the conflict” with Israel, the faculty specified.

Israeli forces are conducting an offensive in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in more than 64,600 deaths in the territory governed by Hamas since 2007.

The offensive followed the Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which led to approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages.
