The topic of the meetings, scheduled to occur at the official residence of the Prime Minister in Lisbon, was confirmed by party sources.
The leader of IL, Mariana Leitão, is set to meet with Luís Montenegro at 5 p.m., followed by André Ventura, the leader of Chega, an hour later at 6 p.m., according to the agenda released by the Prime Minister’s office. On Thursday, at 4:30 p.m., the Secretary-General of PS, José Luís Carneiro, will convene with the head of the government at S. Bento.
These meetings come after an initial series of discussions with all parliamentary groups and the Government in early September, addressing various topics, including the State Budget for 2026.
Following these initial meetings, the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Carlos Abreu Amorim, remarked that the beginning of the talks had a “happy start.”
At the end of August, the Prime Minister and president of PSD had forecasted that the discussion of the State Budget for 2026 would be “relatively simple,” but cautioned the opposition that the Government would not negotiate based on ultimatums or red lines.
“It will be very difficult for the opposition to find arguments to doubt the essence of the State Budget,” he stated, urging that there should not be dramatization surrounding the approval of this document, as if it were a “life-or-death issue.”
The budget proposal will be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic on October 10.
