Seguro appeals for convergence in his candidacy after Ventura’s announcement

“Now things are clearer and the Portuguese know what’s at stake. I renew my appeal to all democrats, humanists, and progressives to converge on my candidacy. My candidacy aims at change in Portugal, uniting the Portuguese. There is too much division, there is too much separation,” responded Seguro to journalists in Braga, after being questioned about the presidential candidacy announcement from the Chega leader.

The candidate for President of the Republic expressed his stance as “against walls” and “in favor of bridges.”

“I am in this candidacy positively. There is too much division in Portuguese society. We need a President who unites, who mobilizes around a project of hope. That is my role,” emphasized the former PS leader.

António José Seguro was a guest speaker tonight at the presidential conference cycle promoted by the CIVICUS- Civic Dynamization Association and the School of Economics, Management and Political Science at the University of Minho, held at the rectorate of this university, in the city of Braga.

Chega leader André Ventura announced today his candidacy for President of the Republic as an anti-system candidate, stating that his participation in the upcoming presidential elections is a way to lead the opposition.

In a statement at the Chega headquarters, André Ventura presented himself as a candidate “on behalf of Chega, anti-system and representing a break with the dominance of the parties,” and considered that former admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, his opponent, is a “representative of the socialist space.”

In addition to André Ventura’s candidacy announced today, other announced candidates include former PSD leader Marques Mendes, former military Gouveia and Melo, former PS leader António José Seguro, former PCP deputy António Filipe, and former BE leader Catarina Martins.
